Mario Febres
In 2000, Mario Febres was introduced to the art of flamenco guitar, its
history, and development. His studies began in Baltimore, Maryland with
Paul Villmoare. Taking a special interest in Spanish culture, as well as its
music and language, in 2001 Mario moved to New Mexico to study music
at the College of Santa Fe, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree. While in
Santa Fe, he also studied privately under renowned flamenco guitarist, Jose
Valle “Chuscales”.
In 2003 during his junior year of college, Mario traveled to Spain
through a study abroad program and studied under Enrique Vargas, learning
the Caño Roto style of flamenco guitar. Upon returning to Santa Fe, he
became a private instructor in flamenco guitar at the College of Santa Fe. In
the fall of 2006, Mario became a part of Yjastros: The American Flamenco
Repertory Company and continued to study under Chuscales and Calvin Hazen.
Today, Mario continues to study flamenco guitar intensely, teaches flamenco guitar at
the charter school Tierra Adentro, and continues to work with Yjastros: The
American Flamenco Repertory Company.
