About
Sebastián Cruz
Born in Beas, Huelva, in 1977, Sebastián Cruz is a vanguard flamenco cantaor whose voice bridges deep tradition and fearless innovation. Raised in a family steeped in songwriting and flamenco heritage, he absorbed the legacy of cante jondo from his father before forging a singular artistic path of his own. Today, Cruz works at the crossroads of flamenco, baroque music, jazz, rock, free improvisation, and electronic sound, expanding the expressive possibilities of the genre.
Equally inspired by Bach and Edgar Allan Poe, Van Gogh and Murillo, Cruz approaches music as a multidisciplinary act: poetic, daring, and profoundly rooted in Andalusian culture. Critics have repeatedly described him as a “cantaor diferente,” recognizing a voice that honors tradition while challenging its boundaries.
From 2006 to 2020, Cruz was a guest singer with the Ballet Nacional de España, collaborating with iconic figures such as Merche Esmeralda, Antonio Canales, Javier Barón, and Lola Greco. He is currently a member of the Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía, under the direction of Rafael Estévez and Úrsula López. His international career has brought him to major stages in New York, Tokyo, Toronto, Miami, Beijing, and Chicago, including acclaimed performances with avant-garde guitarist Raül Cantizano.
Cruz has received flamenco’s most prestigious awards, including the Cante de las Minas, the National Flamenco Art Competition of Córdoba, and the Soleá of Alcalá. He has released four acclaimed albums, recently Zarabanda (2024), named among the year’s five best by El País, ABC Cultural, Rockdelux, Et Sona, and the Spanish Academy of Music.
