The Workshop
In dance classes, choreography and technique will be taught. Workshop choreographies are set to various palos (song forms and rhythms). Choreographies are the original work of the artists/teachers, and students learn flamenco through the experience and unique abilities that these master artists/teachers bring to their work. Workshops consist of six (6) hours of instruction over the course of seven (6) days, June 21-27. Instructors generally do not teach on the day of their scheduled performance.
NOTE: Rafaela Carrasco will not teach on June 21 or June 22. The workshop time has been extended to make sure attendees receive 6 total hours of instruction.

Rafaela Carrasco
Dancer and choreographer Rafaela Carrasco is a leading figure in contemporary flamenco. She founded her own company in 2002 after achieving top honors at the 11th Spanish Dance and Flamenco Choreographic Contest. From 2013 to 2016, she served as Artistic Director of the Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía. In 2023, she garnered the Spanish National Dance Prize.
Throughout her career, Carrasco has stood out for her ability to rethink and personalize flamenco. Her choreographic vision emphasizes innovation, risk-taking, and conceptual designs tailored for ensemble performances. She integrates elements from diverse dance disciplines without neglecting her flamenco roots, continually pushing the boundaries of traditional flamenco through her unique artistic expression.
Her early training was shaped by two influential teachers: Matilde Coral, who instilled in Carrasco rigorous technique and deep passion for flamenco, and Mario Maya, who provided Carrasco with her first professional opportunities in the Compañía Mario Maya and later in the Compañía Andaluza de Danza.
In 1996, Carrasco relocated from Sevilla to Madrid, collaborating with renowned artists and companies such as Belén Maya, Israel Galván, Javier Barón, Adrián Galia, Rafael Amargo, Ricardo Franco, Teresa Nieto, Ramón Oller, Antonio Canales, Farruquito, Duquende, Chicuelo, and Merche Esmeralda.
An internationally respected educator, Carrasco teaches at prestigious institutions, including Amor de Dios in Madrid, the Centro Flamenco de Estudios Escénicos in Granada, the Festival de Jerez, and serves as a professor of flamenco dance methodology at Madrid’s Conservatorio Superior de Danza María de Ávila.
In addition to the Spanish National Dance Prize, her numerous awards include the Giraldillo for Best Choreography and the Press Choice Award for Vamos al Tiroteo, Madrid’s Culture Award (2010), Giraldillo Special Jury Award for El fin y la raíz, the Giraldillo for Best Show for Imágenes. 20 años del Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía, and the Critic’s Choice Award at the Festival de Jerez (2018) for Nacida Sombra.
