THE WORKSHOP

In this class, students will look briefly at the three main components of flamenco – cante, baile, and toque, and the contributions of respected artists throughout history to each of these elements. The class will also examine and discuss current historical research into the African, Latin American and Romani contributions to the art of flamenco, including Dr. Williams’ recent dissertation and upcoming book on the Romani blacksmiths of 16th century Triana. Lastly the class will discuss the current international flamenco scene, including some of the innovative practitioners in this year’s festival.

Workshops consist of six (6) hours of instruction over the course of seven (7) days, June 20-26. Instructors generally do not teach on the day of their scheduled performance.

Gretchen Williams

Gretchen Williams is a former soloist dancer with Yjastros the American Flamenco Repertory Company and a Fulbright Scholar. She completed her doctorate in early modern Spanish history in 2022 under the direction of acclaimed Romani linguist Dr. Ian Hancock. She teaches flamenco history at Festival Flamenco Albuquerque and continues to guest lecture and present her research at conferences both nationally and internationally, including recently at the Renaissance Society and the Association for Spanish and Portuguese Historical Studies. She performed in the world premiere of Adam del Monte’s new flamenco opera Llantos 1492, and she performs regularly at Tablao Flamenco in Albuquerque and with Compañía Chuscales y Mina Fajardo in Santa Fe, as well as various tablaos across the U.S. including at the Tablao La Pinta in Phoenix, Tablao Caló Flamenco in Atlanta, Georgia, and the Century Room in Tucson.
