David Coria
David Coria (Sevilla, Spain) is a leading figure in 21st-century avant-garde flamenco. His innovative choreography, creative aesthetics, and socio-political engagement distinguish him as one of the most compelling Spanish choreographers of his time. French dance critic Rosita Boisseau described his work as “haunted by the shadows of Antonio Gades and Pina Bausch, offering a formidable synthesis of advancements in this art.”
Coria’s dance and stage creations reflect the influence of great choreographers he has worked with, such as Antonio Gades, Pilar López, José Granero, Alberto Lorca, and José Antonio. His artistic evolution was further shaped during his tenure with companies led by Rocío Molina, Eva Yerbabuena, Rafaela Carrasco, and the National Ballet of Spain. From 2013 to 2016, he served as principal dancer, rehearsal director, and choreographer for the Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía.
Coria’s reputation has been cemented by critical and public acclaim for his works. Anónimo won the Audience Award at the 2019 Festival de Jerez. His production ¡Fandango!, premiered in 2020 at the Théâtre National de Chaillot, earned the Critics’ Prize at the 2020 Festival de Jerez and the Giraldillo Award for Best Show at the Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla that same year. Additional honors include being named Best Dancer of the Year by German magazine Tanz and the Lorca Prize for Best Male Dance Performer in 2016.
Currently, Coria leads his own company, presenting internationally acclaimed productions while collaborating on works by other artists. In 2022, he premiered Imperfecto at the Théâtre National de Chaillot, a collaborative creation with contemporary artist Jann Gallois.
