About

The SHOW

La Materia is the second chapter in Olga Pericet’s trilogy, following La Leona and culminating with La Invencible. This triptych is inspired by the guitars crafted by the legendary luthier Antonio de Torres (1817-1892), considered the father of the modern Spanish guitar.

In La Leona, Pericet explored the guitar from an external perspective. With La Materia, she delves inward, evoking the essence of wood, its scent, sound, and silence. The performance marks a pivotal moment in her career, blending echoes of her artistic journey with “a new way of seeing,” as she describes it.

A hallmark of Pericet’s work is her collaboration with other creators. For La Materia, she joins forces with dancer and choreographer Daniel Abreu, co-directing, choreographing, and performing a piece that defies categorization. Both are National Dance Award winners (2018 and 2014), accompanied by José Manuel León on guitar, Juanfe Pérez on bass, and Javier Rabadán on percussion.

Learn More About

Olga Pericet

Olga Pericet is an internationally acclaimed flamenco dancer and choreographer known for blending tradition with daring innovation. Her performances embody the contrasts of flamenco: dark and luminous, feminine and masculine, unsettling and beautiful. Recognized as “one of the great contemporary figures of flamenco” (Paris Art), “a mercurial presence and fearless experimenter” (The New Yorker), and praised for her “ferocious energy paired with sophisticated technique” (The Guardian), Pericet is a trailblazer in her field.

In 2018, she received Spain’s prestigious National Dance Award for her ability to merge Spanish dance disciplines into a distinctive interpretative language and for her versatility and power as a performer. Her accolades include the MAX Award for Best Dance Performer (Un cuerpo infinito, 2020), the ACE Award for Theater Excellence (2016), and multiple others honoring her creativity and technical mastery.

Her latest work, La Materia (2023), premiered at the Temporada Alta Festival in Girona as the second part of a trilogy inspired by the iconic guitars of Antonio de Torres. The first installment, La Leona (2022), debuted at the Bienal de Sevilla and was celebrated for its raw honesty and feline flamenco power. Other notable works include Un cuerpo infinito (2019), La espina que quiso ser flor (2017), Pisadas (2014), and Bolero (2004).

Pericet thrives in collaboration, working with esteemed artists like Manuel Liñán, Marco Flores, and Carlota Ferrer. She recently joined forces with choreographer Daniel Abreu for La Materia. Beyond her stage work, she has choreographed for the National Ballet of Spain and the Opera of Oviedo. A fearless innovator, Olga Pericet continues to redefine flamenco with authenticity, creativity, and an unyielding passion for the art form.
